EFTA parliamentarians visited Ottawa

8.2.2007

Members of the Parliamentary Committee of the EFTA- states, Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein and Switzerland, were on a two day working visit to discuss free trade between EFTA and Canada in Ottawa on February 6 and 7.

After a briefing session on Canadian affairs with the Ambassadors of Iceland, Norway and Switzerland, the EFTA parliamentarians were greeted by the Speaker of the House, Peter Milliken, and met with their counterparts on Parliament Hill on several occasions. They attended meetings of both the House of Commons Committee on International Trade and the Standing Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs.

The visitors also met with Ted Menzies, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for International Trade, Deputy Minister Marie Lucie Morin and David Plunkett, Director General and Chief Negotiator for Canada in the EFTA talks.

Under the chairmanship of Gudlaugur Thór Gudlaugsson, member of the Icelandic Parliament, the EFTA parliamentarians put great emphasis on the conclusion of a free trade agreement between EFTA and Canada that has been negotiated for an extended period of time and is now in its final stages.
