Independence Day celebrated at Ottawa Embassy
The occasion also marks the 60th anniversary of formal diplomatic relations between Iceland and Canada. Canadian government officials, Members of Parliament, foreign diplomats and Canadians with special links with Iceland were present to celebrate the events.
Among the guests was Speaker of the House of Commons, Peter Milliken, who went on an official visit to Iceland in 2002 by invitation of the Speaker of the Icelandic Parliament, Halldór Blöndal. He himself visited the Parliament of Canada the same year.
In a joint letter of congratulations on the Icelandic Independence Day June 17th to the current Speaker of the Icelandic Parliament, Sturla Böðvarsson, Speaker Milliken with Speaker of the Senate Noël A. Kinsella stated:
“Cooperation between our two Parliaments stands to make an important contribution to the further development of our bilateral relations and will reinforce our shared goals of peace and prosperity. We therefore commit to lessen any geographical distance between us through a regular exchange of ideas and experiences that will promote relations between our two countries”.
