Prime Ministers of Iceland and Canada held a meeting in Ottawa
The new agreement is expected to be ready for signing within the next few months. It will be similar to an agreement with Norway and a joint declaration with Denmark, both of which were completed last year. This underlines continued efforts by the Icelandic government authorities with the aim to strengthen Iceland’s peace time cooperation with its closest neighbours and partners within NATO.
Furthermore, the two Prime Ministers talked about the implementation of the recent free trade agreement between the EFTA-states, including Iceland, and Canada, plus the new “open-skies” air services agreement between Iceland and Canada. Issues relating to the Arctic, partnership in peace keeping and the longstanding cultural ties between the two countries were also addressed.
