Visa for Iceland / Schengen Visa

In New Delhi the Danish Embassy handles visa applications for Iceland.

Since the 25th of March 2001, Iceland has been a part of the Schengen Agreement with 14 other European countries; this for instance secures unrestricted passage for individuals within the Schengen area. This agreement resulted in changes in the handling of tourist visas.

Those who enter the Schengen area go through passport control in the first country they arrive in, and then there is no further inspection. It can therefore be said that when a visa is issued for a trip to Iceland, the visa is not issued exclusively for Iceland as it gives access to all other Schengen countries. Therefore the processing of visas is now different than when the visa was exclusive to Iceland.

Countries within the Schengen Agreement can issue visas on each others behalf, and embassies of other Schengen countries in over 100 places the world over issue visas on Iceland’s behalf.
