Letter of Credence
Mr Guðni Bragason delivered his Letter of Credence as Permanent Representative of Iceland to Dr Jacques Diouf, Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, at a ceremony in the FAO Headquarters in Rome on Friday, 14th October. On that occation Dr Diouf thanked the Icelandic Goverment for opening an Permanent Mission to the FAO and United Nations organizations in Rome.
The aim of the FAO is to achieve food security for all humankind. The Organization works for the benefit of all member countries. It is a forum for policy making, information gathering and sharing and technical know-how. The FAO is the only world-wide organization dealing directly with fisheries issues and the living resources of the ocean. The Permanent Mission in Rome represents Icelandic interests in the field of fisheries and agriculture at the Organization and fosters development cooperation between Iceland and other countries.
The Permanent Mission of Iceland in Rome also represents the Government of Iceland at the World Food Programme (WFP) which brings emergency food aid to people in need and supports social and economic development. The WFP organizes food aid to people suffering from hunger as a result of natural disasters, poverty and armed conflict. The Icelandic Government has supported the relief work of the WFP in various parts of the world, such as relief on the earthquake areas in Pakistan
The Permanent Mission also represents Iceland at the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). The Fund provides loans and grants for development projects in agriculture and fisheries in order to enhance food production. The aim of the IFAD is to enable the rural poor, living of agriculture and fisheries, to overcome poverty.
Guðni Bragason afhenti dr. Jacques Diouf, aðalframkvæmdastjóra Matvæla- og landbúnaðarstofnunar Sameinuðu þjóðanna (FAO) trúnaðarbréf sitt sem fastafulltrúi Íslands hjá FAO föstudaginn 14. október sl. Við það tækifæri lýsti dr. Diouf yfir ánægju sinni með það, að íslensk stjórnvöld hafa opnað fastanefnd hjá FAO og stofnunum Sameinuðu þjóðanna í Róm.
Ísland var stofnaðili að FAO árið 1945. Markmið stofnunarinnar er að tryggja fæðuöryggi allra jarðarbúa. Stofnunin vinnur í þágu allra aðildarríkjanna, þróunarríkja jafnt sem þróaðra ríkja, og er vettvangur fyrir stefnumörkun, upplýsingaöflun og tækniþekkingu. Stofnunin er eina alheimsstofnunin, sem fjallar um málefni sjávarútvegs og lifandi auðlinda hafsins. Sem slík gegnir hún mikilvægu hlutverki í alþjóðasamstarfi Íslendinga að nýtingu auðlinda hafsins. Fastanefndin í Róm gætir hagsmuna Íslands á sviði sjávarútvegs og landbúnaðar í starfi stofnunarinnar og stuðlar að þróunarsamvinnu milli Íslands og annarra landa.
Fastanefnd Íslands í Róm hefur einnig fyrirsvar af hálfu íslenskra stjórnvalda gagnvart Matvælaáætlun Sameinuðu þjóðanna (World Food Programme, WFP), sem vinnur að neyðaraðstoð og styðjur félagslega og efnahagslega þróun. WFP skipuleggur umfangsmikla matvælaaðstoð við fólk sem býr við hungur af völdum náttúruhamfara, fátæktar og ófriðar. Íslensk stjórnvöld hafa stutt neyðaraðstoð WFP víða um heim, nú síðast á jarðskjálftasvæðum í Pakistan. Fastanefndin sinnir einnig IFAD-sjóðnum sem aflar fjár fyrir lán með lágum vöxtum og veitir styrki til þróunarverkefna í landbúnaði og sjávarútvegi í þeim tilgangi að auka fæðuframleiðslu í viðkomandi löndum. Markmið IFAD er að gera fátæku fólki, sem lifir af landbúnaði og veiðum, kleift að brjótast úr fátæktinni.
