Reykjavik, Iceland, 30 October 2008 - The Faroe Islands have offered Iceland a loan of DKK 300 million. The offer was presented at a meeting in Helsinki, Finland, where Icelandic, Faroese and other Nordic politicians and officials were attending the Nordic Council Session.

All services - including banking services – are functioning as on any other day. Hotels, restaurants, airlines, car rentals, currency exchange facilities, offices, shops, etc. are all open for normal business. Visitors can be assured that they will be treated with same friendly hospitality that Icelanders have become known for throughout the travel world.

Due to the special circumstances on the Icelandic financial markets the Government of Icelandic has decided to open an information center for the public, businesses and the media, both in Iceland and abroad.

The Icelandic government appreciates that the British authorities are willing to step in and respond to the immediate concerns of depositors of Landsbankinn Icesave accounts.

The governments of the two countries will immediately review the matter in detail through official channels with a view to finding a mutually satisfactory solution.

It should also be highlighted that on Monday evening changes were made to the Act on the Depositors’ and Investors’ Guarantee Fund strengthening the position of depositors by giving them priority when allocating assets.

There is a good probability that the total assets of Landsbankinn will be sufficient to cover the deposits in IceSave.

The Icelandic government reiterates that if needed it will support The Depositors’ and Investors’ Guarantee Fund in raising necessary funds.

The government of Iceland is determined not to let the current financial crisis overshadow the long standing friendship between Iceland and the United Kingdom.

Writers, translators and scholars (not university students) in the field of humanities from outside Iceland, are eligible to apply for this fellowship which enables a stay in Iceland for a period of at least three months in order to improve their knowledge of the Icelandic language, culture and society.

Applications by ordinary mail (no e-mail applications) should be sent no later than 31 October 2008 to the Sigurdur Nordal Institute in Iceland.

Kling & Bang, the artists collective from Iceland, will commemorate Sirkus, a Reykjavik bar, landmark, and hub of the alternative arts scene, which is due for demolition. Kling og Bang will save its facade and interior and re-erect it at the Frieze Art Fair, like a circus moving to another town. A zany nomadic act reflecting the drive of Icelandic art, producing a situation of one circus within another for artists to respond to.

‘SEYDISFJ R U ’ is a site specific installation produced by artists Mhari Baxter and Melissa MacRobert as a result of their joint residency at Skaftfell Cultural Centre in Iceland last year.

On the 23rd of December there will be a Christmas Service for the Icelandic congregation in London at 3pm in the Swedish church on Harcourt Street (nearest tube station Edgware Road). Icelandic artist Katrín Friðriks’ exhibition FACEBOOKER is at the Design Centre Knightsbridge in London until 14th January 2008. Katrin, an Icelandic artist living in Paris, has received much praise for her work in France, Germany and Iceland and is now on show in the UK for the first time.

On Monday 3rd December 2007 at Leighton House Museum, Icelandic musicians of the Valley Group will preform Iceland´s most beloved romantic poems by Jonas Hallgrímsson set to music by the composer Atli Heimir Sveinsson.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Mrs Ingibjörg Sólrún Gísladótir, has delivered her first foreign policy speech to Althingi, the Parliament of Iceland. In her address, Ms. Gísladóttir discussed Iceland's foreign policy challenges with a special focus on Iceland's role in a globalized world.
