Ambassador Kristmundsdottir presents Credentials to King Letsi III
Ambassador of Iceland presents credentials in the Kingdom of Lesotho for the first time.
Ambassador Sigridur Duna Kristmundsdottir, presented her credentials to HM King Letsie III, in Lesotho on 6 September as Ambassador of Iceland with residence in Pretoria. The Kingdom of Lesotho and Iceland have had Diplomatic relations since 1983, but this is the first time that an Ambassador of Iceland presents credentials to the Kingdom. The Ambassador held discussions with King Letsie III, and meetings with both Prime Minister P. Mosisili and Foreign Minister M. Phooko. The discussions referred to the importance of cooperation between small countries and their support to each other in the Internationl Forum.
The Ambassador requested Lesotho’s support to Iceland’s candidacy to the United Nation Security Council and also discussed the importance of ratifying the EFTA-SACU Free Trade Agreement that will enable business between the two States. Lesotho showed great interest in cooperation with Iceland in the field of business and development, especially with regards to hydropower projects, fishfarming and social development. Lesotho, which is surrounded by South Africa, is amongsto one of the poorest countries on the continent, although literacy is one of the highest within the African States. The statutes dealing with foreign investments are more applicable in Lesotho than in most other countries on the continent. Lesotho also offers a unique natural beauty and is considered to be an eligible tourist destination.
Sendiherra Íslands afhendir í fyrsta sinn trúnaðarbréf gagnvart Konungsríkinu Lesótó
Sigríður Dúna Kristmundsdóttir, sendiherra, afhenti 6. september sl., Letsie III, konungi Lesótó, trúnaðarbréf sitt sem sendiherra Íslands gagnvart Lesótó með aðsetur í Pretoríu. Konungsríkið og Ísland hafa haft stjórnmálasamband frá 1983 en íslenskur sendiherra hefur ekki áður afhent trúnaðarbréf sitt gagnvart ríkinu. Í tengslum við athöfnina átti sendiherra samtal við konung og fundi með P. Mosisili, forsætisráðherra, og M. Phooko, starfandi utanríkisráðherra. Rætt var um mikilvægi þess að lítil ríki ynnu saman og styddu hvert annað á alþjóðavettvangi.
Fór sendiherra fram á stuðning Lesótó við framboð Íslands til öryggisráðs Sameinuðu Þjóðanna og ræddi einnig mikilvægi fullgildingar EFTA-SACU fríverslunarsamningsins, sem myndi greiða fyrir viðskiptum ríkjanna. Fram kom mikill áhugi Lesótómanna á samstarfi við Ísland á sviði viðskipta og þróunarsamvinnu, einkum hvað varðar virkjun fallvatna, fiskeldi og félagsleg verkefni. Lesótó, sem er fjallaríki umkringt Suður Afríku, er meðal fátækustu ríkja álfunnar, en læsi er samt með því hæsta sem gerist í Afríkuríkjum og lög um erlendar fjárfestingar rýmri en víða annars staðar í álfunni. Lesótó hefur einnig upp á einstaka náttúrufegurð að bjóða og er álitið ákjósanlegt ferðamannaland.
