Iceland's first time presentation at the International Festival at University of Johannesburg

On 5 October the Embassy participated in the International Festival at the University of Johannesburg. This was the fifth International Festival held although the first time Iceland had participated. Iceland’s involvement was appropriate both because of the inauguration of the Embassy of Iceland in February 2007 and also since this is the first time that an Icelandic exchange student from Reykjavik University has studied at the University of Johannesburg. Ambassador Kristmundsdottir attended the Festival although the exhibition was presented by the Embassy’s officer and student from Reykjavik University, Yr Sigurdardottir.

The Festival was extremely lively and many Nations participated by introducing their countries and cultures. The three exhibitiors of Western countries were Iceland, Germany and the United States of America. Additionally there were competitions held for the best booth, food, dance- and singing performances. Iceland did not participate in the competitions, but was able to satisfy the curiosity of many attending guests with the exellent promotions and beautiful photographs of both the Icelandic country and Nation.

Ísland kynnt í fyrsta sinn á Alþjóðahátíð Háskólans í Jóhannesarborg

Þann 5. október tók sendiráðið þátt í Alþjóðahátíð Háskólans í Jóhannesarborg. Þetta var í fimmta sinn sem slík hátíð er haldin en í fyrsta skipti sem Ísland tekur þátt. Þátttaka Íslands var viðeigandi bæði vegna opnunar sendiráðs Íslands í Pretoríu, Suður Afríku í febrúar síðastliðinn og einnig vegna þess að þetta er í fyrsta sinn sem íslenskur skiptinemi er í námi við háskólann á vegum Háskólans í Reykjavík. Var Sigríður Dúna Kristmundsdóttir, sendiherra viðstödd á hátíðinni en að kynningunni stóð starfsmaður sendiráðs og nemandi Háskólans í Reykjavík, Ýr Sigurðardóttir.

Hátíðin var mjög lífleg og margar þjóðir tóku þátt í að kynna land sitt og menningu. Þrjár vestrænar þjóðir tóku þátt í hátíðinni en auk Íslands voru Þýskaland og Bandaríkin með kynningu. Einnig var haldin samkeppni og dæmt hverjir hefðu upp á að bjóða besta kynningarbásinn, matinn, og dans- og söngatriði. Ísland tók ekki þátt í keppninni en gat þó svalað forvitni fjölmargra gesta sem stöldruðu við með góðri kynningu og fallegum myndum af bæði landi og þjóð.
