National Day of Iceland celebrated in Pretoria

On 17 June 2008 the Ambassador of Iceland, Dr. Sigridur Duna Kristmundsdottir held a reception at the Residence to celebrate the National Day of Iceland. The reception was attended by Ambassadors, representatives of the government and Department of Foreign Affairs of South Africa, business, media and Icelanders in South Africa.

In her speech the Ambassador gave thanks for the support that Iceland has received for its first time candidature for a non-permanent seat to the United Nation’s Security Council. The Ambassador also reviewed the matters that the Embassy has been involved with during the past two years.

Deputy Director-General, Ambassador Gert Grobler gave, on behalf of the South African government, thanks for good co-operation. Toasts were given to the Presidents of both Nations and for thriving relations between South Africa and Iceland.  

For the occasion, the Embassy brought a part of Pall Stefansson’s photographic exhibition, which is now on display at the Gordardt Gallery in Johannesburg, to the Residence for the guests to enjoy.

Þjóðhátíðardagur Íslands haldinn hátíðlegur í Pretoríu

Í tilefni af þjóðhátíð bauð sendiherra Íslands, Dr. Sigríður Dúna Kristmundsdóttir, til móttöku í sendiráðsbústaðnum þann 17. júní 2008. Til móttökunnar var boðið sendiherrum erlendra ríkja, fulltrúum ríkisstjórnar og utanríkisráðuneytis Suður Afríku, forstöðumönnum helstu stofnanna, fjölmiðlum, ræðismönnum Íslands og Íslendingum í Suður Afríku og umdæmislöndum Þróunarsamvinnustofnun Íslands.

Í ræðu sinni notaði sendiherra tækifærið og þakkaði stuðning við framboð Íslands til Öryggisráðs Sameinuðu Þjóðanna. Einnig fór sendiherra yfir þau mál sem hafa verið efst á baugi hjá sendiráðinu undanfarin tvö ár.

Ráðuneytisstjóri, Gert Grobler, hélt ræðu fyrir hönd suður-afrískra stjórnvalda og þakkaði gott samstarf. Skálað var fyrir forsetum ríkjanna og dafnandi samskiptum Suður Afríku og Íslands.

Sendiráðið flutti hluta af ljósmyndasýningu Páls Stefánssonar, sem nú stendur í Gordart Gallerí í Jóhannesarborg, í bústaðinn fyrir móttökuna og skoðuðu gestir myndirnar. Nálægt 200 manns sóttu móttökuna.
